Not nearly enough attention has been given, IMO. It seems as though every single sane republican has their head buried in the sand, because without the crazies, the party would cease to exist.

I THINK it's a matter of "it can't happen here". The right-leaning moderates who normally vote republican can't fathom that the extremists ARE REALLY EXTREMISTS.

As usual, conservatives are the last to recognize change that happened a decade ago.

Not just the Republicans with their heads in the sand - the media.

Oh reporters where art thou?

CNN I am talking to you - NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox we needn't mention because they probably agree with the nuts.

Clarification: I don't think NBC, CBS and ABC agree with the nuts BUT they sure haven't been alert to the extremism of the GOP have they.

These stories, sans the Jesus flag guy, actually made it into today's LA Times and my local paper. Whether anybody else is paying any attention to them is another question.

This kind of crankery is absolutely the norm, the mainstream, among Republicans here in west Texas. Young Earth creationists, Confederate apologists, WW2 revisionists, and anti-UN militia nuts have proliferated like some kind of virulent fungus over the last few years. There is even a trend toward UFO conspiracy theories among the local RWNJs. Things like climate change denial and trickle down economics are taken for granted, just part of the background. From the frequency with which these kooks pop up elsewhere without being voted out or recalled, I suspect that this is the case throughout the south.
